The AONB has good connections with both the A-road network and the M6 Motorway. The eastern boundary
of the AONB is coincident for much of its length with the A6 between Carnforth and Milnthorpe. Whilst it
is easy to reach the Area by car initially, the roads within the AONB are generally narrow and confined.
Parking is also difficult both within the villages and out on the rural road network with few formal car parks.
Approaching from the South, leave the M6 at junction 35, CARNFORTH, onto the A6 (M) towards the A6.
At the roundabout, head for Milnthorpe and the the first opportunity to entry the AONB via the village
of Warton is about half a mile ahead. There are then a number of side roads off the A6 which feed into
the villages of Yealand Conyers and Yealand Redmayne. The A6 then crosses Hale Moss and crosses the
county boundary of Lancashire and Cumbria. The next turning on the left, signed to Arnside adjacent to
the Wildlife Oasis building is just before the road rises off the peat moss and approaches Hale village
crossroads, which offers another link into the Hale Moss to Arnside road.
Further north on the A6 you reach the village of Beetham, with links into the AONB along
very narrow and meandering lanes. The final link into the AONB off the A6 is at the centre of Milnthorpe
where the road from Crooklands and Holme crosses the A6 at the trafficlights.
Travelling within the AONB by car is not so easy or as enjoyable an experience as many may be expecting.
The lanes are narrow and do feel very closed in by high walls and hedgerows, a feeling that those
new to the area are especially likely to be intimidated by. It is even accentuated if you come straight off the M6 and
then the wide open curves and broad verges of the A6.
The area is small and to really explore it effectively you need to leave the car behind. It is more than
possible to park the car where you are staying and then spend your entire visit making a journey of
discovery, on foot, by bike, by bus and even by train!
You will only get to know the real Arnside and Silverdale AONB if you travel around at the slowest
possible pace - the car will not provide you with the best experiences of the area once you get here.
